I talk a lot about how much I love my wand but it’s got a whole exciting history behind it! So today I’m going to tell you the story of the Hitachi Magic Wand!
Originally created in 1968 by the Japanese company Hitachi (yep, the folks who make power tools and stuff), the Hitachi Magic Wand was marketed as a massager for relaxing sore muscles and relieving tension. Then, in the early 1970s, sex education pioneer Betty Dodson, noting the Hitachi Magic Wand’s effectiveness as a clitoral vibrator, popularized its use as a masturbation aid.
Through the years the Hitachi Magic Wand was part of several fun pop culture moments: In 1992 chocolates were produced in the shape of the massager in honor of the 15-year anniversary of the Good Vibrations sex shop. A 2002 episode of Sex and The City featured the Hitachi Magic Wand, causing the massagers to sell out in stores across the US. In 2005 Mobile Magazine readers voted the Hitachi Magic Wand “the No. 1 greatest gadget of all time”. In the meantime, the Hitachi corporation was modestly marketing a “massager”.
Finally in 2013, after over 30 years as the king of the vibrators, the Hitachi Magic Wand underwent a little makeover- nothing major, a nip here, a tuck there, and a tweak to its name – bye, bye “Hitachi”! – bringing the wand into the new millennium as the Magic Wand Original.
So, that’s the story of the wand I know and love today – the same wand that has been loved by women for over 30 years and that I think will be loved by generations to come!
